When it comes to choosing a scooter for your child there are many different things that you should look at to make sure that you make the right choice. The most obvious thing most parents look for is the height of the scooter, this is something that is quite obvious. There are many other characteristics that go overlooked, so below we have compiled a list of different characteristics you should look for when looking at a scooter for kids.
Wheels
The wheels are the first thing you should look at after you determine the height of the scooter. Knowing the different types will help you assess what kind of terrain you can ride the scooter on. Long and narrow wheels are best suited for unpaved roads and go over bumps and cracks smoothly, they are a little harder to control. Rubber wheels are only really great for smooth surfaces and can reach great speeds which might not suit some parents. Generally, the wider the wheel is the more stability the rider will also have.
Standing Platform
The platform needs to have a bit of a rough surface because this gives the rider more grip making it easier to stand on. If you choose a scooter with a broad base it is best suited for small children – the thinner the base the better it is for older children who have better developed motor skills and reflexes. You should also be aware of the length of the platform as the longer it is, the harder is actually is to control, so you should choose a platform you think will suit the size and skill set of your child.
Material
You can find scooters for kids made from metal, plastic, or a combination of both. While plastic scooters are light and great for small children they probably won’t last as long with a kid who likes to ride hard. While a metal scooter is heavier, it is more durable and the heaviness of the scooter will actually be better for their physical development over time. Most metal scooters are made of a combination of either aluminium or steel. Steel is heavy but will last a lot longer where are aluminium is light but can get damaged easily.
Handlebars
When it comes to choosing a scooter for kids you are best choosing a model that has handlebars that are also adjustable. Most trick models don’t have this option so you should avoid them for kids. The reason you want something that is adjustable is so that you can adjust the scooter as your kids grow. You should also make sure that the handlebar has grips on it to make sure that your kids can grab on comfortably.
Brakes
Last but not least, look at where the brakes are placed. There are usually two types of brakes, the first being above the rear wheel and the second being at the front. While the front brake may be okay when you are taking a leisurely stroll, they are quite dangerous to use at fast speeds. Many children can easily fall off or even over the handlebars. In the best interest of safety, you should choose a back brake.
